Graduate School of Science and Engineering

The Faculty of Science and Engineering Studies is devised to foster individuals with deep insight and high expertise who can accurately evaluate the corresponding problems and suggest constructive solutions through a systematic approach to the investigation of natural and human phenomena. The faculty is also geared towards the creation of a society in harmony with natural environment and the sustainable development of the human community without ceasing to conduct world-class research and share related findings with the general public.

Emphasizing the dynamic integration of science and engineering, which were conventionally divided into two separate academic disciplines, the faculty continues to advance education and research in the fields of science and technology. The two-year, first-half of the doctorate curriculum consists of 1 major in science, 7 majors in engineering, and 1 major in independent work; the three-year, second-half of the doctorate curriculum is composed of 6 majors. In addition, students may take lectures and seminars conducted by visiting professors invited from affiliated research institutes and other graduate schools in partnership.

Master's Program

Major in Science

This major in science is composed of five courses, providing graduate students with curricula corresponding to fundamental and well-established fields of science. The courses are Mathematics-Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences. The major aims at educational and research activities, cultivating in establishing a profound knowledge and research ability in the corresponding courses. The major also aims at acquiring widespread knowledge in related interdisciplinary fields of scientific interest and culture so that students can respond flexibly to changes in our present society.

Major in Mechanical Engineering

Today's industrialization and the information society are based on high-performance, sophisticated machineries driven by various energy sources. In this major, education and research on these related fields are implemented, ranging from fundamentals to applications, including highly optimized, reliable machine design technologies, highly developed, intelligent manufacturing processes, and highly efficient environmentally friendly energy conversion technologies.

Major in Materials and Molecular Science

Research and development of materials and molecules with new functions are indispensable for the sustainable development of a highly industrialized society.
The division of Materials and Molecular Science fosters high-level technological experts and researchers who will contribute their expertise and outstanding problem solving abilities to society, taking into account the natural environment, in the fields covering applied functional chemistry, bioscience and biotechnology, and materials engineering.
The division consists of the Biomolecular Functional Engineering course and the Materials Engineering course, in order to offer qualified education and research.

Major in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and electronic engineering skillfully controls and highly uses electromagnetic phenomena related with electrons, ions, and photons. This major, aiming at the creation of new energy and advanced electronics, conducts wide education and research on semiconductors, electrical and electronic materials and devices, basic principles and applications of plasma and electric discharge phenomena, computational physics, electromagnetic field analysis of electric machines, automatic controls, distributed control systems, electromagnetic wave engineering, biomagnetism, photonics, and optical communication. Education on computer utilization is also fully provided.

Major in Media and Telecommunication Engineering

The Major in Media and Telecommunications Engineering is responsible for education and research on science and technologies in the areas of multimedia devices, information processing and telecommunications. The purpose of this major is to cultivate skilled engineers who will contribute to the industry, mainly in the areas of computer, and information and telecommunications.
Various research fields are covered by the faculty and their achievements are fed back as education. Research fields include multimedia devices for information and telecommunications, advanced human interface, and information processing for multimedia communications, and telecommunications technologies such as optical communications, wireless communications, and information networks. Applications of optics and radio signal processing are also included.
The graduate students of the Major in Media and Telecommunications Engineering study the advanced courses in the above-mentioned technical fields related to media and telecommunications engineering, following the study on the basics in the undergraduate course. Not only academic programs but also practical programs are prepared for the graduate students, for example, they are engaged in research projects where they can brush up their technical skills as well as management and presentation skills through participation in research projects lead by the faculty. Another example of the practical program is "Practice in Computer Networks" to get a certificate of CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). A number of graduate students enrolled successfully get the CCNA license, which is helpful to secure employment in excellent companies. Through the accomplishment of a master thesis, they are awarded the Master's of Engineering degree.
There are three courses for graduate students in the Major in Media and Telecommunications Engineering: Media and Telecommunications Engineering course and two additional courses according to "Cooperative Program of Four Graduate Schools in Advanced Informatics of Creativity, Education and Research", i.e. Advanced Human-Oriented Informatics course and Advanced Society Oriented Informatics course.

Major in Computer and Information Sciences

In this major, a comprehensive program is offered to meet various different demands on computer systems in our modern society.
The computer science field of studies offers the following subjects on computer science and software development: Analysis of Algorithm, Automata and Formal Language Theory, Discrete Mathematics, Project Management, Software Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Object-oriented Systems, and others.
The computer and information system field of studies offers the following subjects on methodology and techniques to produce complex and diverse information systems: Information and Communication Engineering, Intelligent Informatics, Information Security, Computer Networks, Distributed Systems, Image Processing, Adaptive Learning Systems, Educational Technology, and others.

Major in Urban and Civil Engineering

Education and studies pursued in the Major in Urban and Civil Engineering are conducted to support, establish, and maintain a dynamically stable and robust infrastructure and to provide a high-quality urban environment. Such an environment must be robust against hazards and be well harmonized with the natural environment, and be responsive to the diverse social requirements of our own society that is IT-oriented, aging, and undergoing drastic transformations resulting from climate change.

Major studies in Urban and Civil Engineering are of two courses: Urban and Civil Engineering Course and Sustainability Science Course.

Major in Intelligent Systems Engineering

The objective of Major in Intelligent Systems Engineering (ISE) is to foster competent human resources able to take a leading role in the field that highly integrates computer and mechanics. The graduates are expected to have a broad perspective, international competency and expertise in both applied computer science and mechanical engineering.
Major in ISE consists of three sub-disciplines: Intelligent Mechanical Systems, Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Intelligent Information Systems. Students can acquire both knowledge and skills of computer, mechanics and their integration while they are majoring in one of three sub-disciplines.
Based on fundamental subjects provided in the undergraduate program in the Department of ISE, the Major in ISE offers curriculum content of advanced knowledge about information and mechanical engineering, integrated technologies of computer and mechanics, as well as upskilling practical abilities.
Students are also required to have common subjects to cultivate a broad perspective with the trend of globalization. Through the subjects such as the advanced study and advanced research, students are able to develop their problem finding-and-solving abilities, and communication skills via interactions with their supervisors.

Major in Applied Beam Science

This major is an independent major of the department of science and engineering graduate course for the graduates of various departments and subjects.
We practice the education and researches as centering on applying and analyzing structures of bio substance like protein, solid ?liquid ?gas, and plasma state, as utilizing neutron beam, proton beam, r- ray, electron beam, x - ray, laser, and so on. We aim at nurturing new type researchers and engineers who are free from old framework.
This major consists of mainstay four fields of quantum basic science, structural biology, neutron material science, and information science of energy ? risk, with the cooperating field of basic nuclear science.

Doctoral Program

Major in Materials Science

The major aim of our division is to develop various materials with new functions. In order to achieve this, research is conducted to explain structures, and functional and physical properties of wide-ranging substances from atoms/molecules to organic/inorganic materials and living organisms. The division consists of three fields: Molecular Engineering, Materials Properties Engineering, and Materials Systems. There is also the field: New Materials Science that is a joint research program with Hitachi Ltd. The division offers basic education and conducts research with interdisciplinary and comprehensive policies in close collaboration with one another.

Major in Industrial Science

For modern manufacturing engineering and technology, innovative high value-added product development is needed under sophisticated production systems. Furthermore, such technologies must be developed in harmony with human society and with due consideration to their impact on the natural environment. For sound development of manufacturing science, the most advanced fields of Energy Systems, Design and Production Processes, Measurement and Control Systems, and Power Energy Systems (incorporated with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency) will be studied in close liaison with these areas.

Major in Information and Systems Sciences

Today we live in a highly artificial society where software and hardware systems are necessary, but which also necessitates research into their impact on the environment.. The Doctoral degree program of the Information and System Engineering course provides intensive preparation for researchers who study and develop social environment systems, electronic and telecommunication systems, computer science, and optical communications.

Major in Physical Sciences

This major consists of field research on various physical?chemical developments from a basic science viewpoint and of field research on the cosmic earth environment from a global viewpoint, while also acquiring a solid understanding about global environment origins in the universe. Mathematical science which is the basis of science and engineering is also acquired.
We aim at nurturing capable people who can contribute to society by acquiring a solid understanding of basic science and global environmental conservation.

Major in Environmental and Functional Sciences

In order to cope with the rapidly progressing sciences and technologies in the advanced and combined science fields, three courses are provided in this major: Biological and Environmental Systems, Functional Systems Science, and Science for the Synthesis of New Functions. In these courses, a wide variety of educational and research pursuits are performed to discover important life functions and essential interactions in the natural and artificial environments, and to develop useful materials.

Major in Applied Beam Science

This major is an independent major of the Department of Science and Engineering graduate course for graduates of various departments.
We practice education and research centering on applying and analyzing structures of such bio substances as protein, solid ?liquid ?gas, and plasma states, through the utilization of neutron beams, proton beams, r- rays, electron beams, x - rays, lasers, etc. We aim at nurturing a new type of researcher and engineer free from outmoded practices.
This major consists of the four fields of quantum basic science, structural biology, neutron material science, and information science of energy ? risk, with the cooperating field of basic nuclear science.
